Selecting your Travel Bag

Bags / Rucksacks / Backpacks – The very important but not best understood and easily ignored.  My house is full of examples of mediocre / value for money (read low cost) bags which we don’t use any more as they give up from one corner or other when packed full in middle of journey.

However, my two bags, semi backpack and carry-on / laptop bag, which I am using since 2008 have not. (more…)

Trekking and Walking Trails in Mumbai

For Mumbai, one of the most loved and cosmopolitan city of India, is also a cosmopolitan wrt to nature and its infrastructure.  When you hear of a metro city, you typically associate skyscrapers, traffic jams, congestion, and at times river / sea front.  What about trekking?  No?  Staying back for the night in the jungle? No again?  But according to me – Yes!! (more…)

What do you do when a friend’s message pops up – Dudhsagar falls tomorrow?  If you are in Mumbai you will probably say yes.  What if you are in 1700km away?

So this is how it went.  It was around 10:30AM on Saturday morning that this message comes.  I wonder what and where is Dudhsagar Waterfall? I google and find that it is the fifth biggest waterfall in India.  I talk to him.  Unsure how exactly it will be, I ask him again.  His answer – come, it will great, worth it. (more…)

Taj Mahal – When the World Stopped

Everyone has heard of Taj Mahal – as a wonder of the world, or as monument of Love.  If not this then as a building with exquisite marble work.  I too started hearing about it when I was a kid, through books, TV or general interaction with elders.  There was a curiosity to see it but it being close to our place it always got put off – next time we will see for sure.  Decades past and next time never came.

By the time I grew up Taj Mahal faded into my memory due to excessive exposure of pictures and general chit chat here and there making me believe that something I have not seen but have fully seen.  After all it is a building only at the end of the day.  Having seen pictures from different angles, and zooms, I had not been able to establish a sense of its size.  I assumed just like another size which should be.  (more…)

Sector 17 Market, Chandigarh

Chandigarh City, city beautiful, is a small city in North India, hub of upper north India and gateway to hills.  It is still a small city for India with population of over 1mn.  Chandigarh City may not offer a cosmopolitan life of big and global cities, avenues to nurture and develop your artistic side, but is one of the most comfortable to live in as a resident more importantly, it has enough to appreciate nature, and practice the artist in you.  (more…)

Rock Garden has always been a prime attraction of and for Chandigarh.  And why not? Where will you find statues, sculptures, art, and creativity spread over 40 acres made purely from discarded and waste materials such as bone china crockery, ceramics, floor tiles, broken glass bangles, earthen pots, electrical sockets, waste gravel, and more.  Nowhere else in the world this type of work exists at this scale.  (more…)

Tourist in Chandigarh – The Home Town

Fountain, Tourist in Chandigarh Rock Garden, Tourist in Chandigarh

Every thought how much do you know about your city? Are you well aware of your city as its resident?  Or you actually know the city well? Been a tourist in Chandigarh?  Before moving out of my hometown for studies and work, I spent first 21 years of my life in Chandigarh.  Then I thought I knew everything about it.  What was there to know? Handful of cinema halls which were running since decades.  One posh market place, one less posh, and two bargain markets.  Plus few standard eating places which would close down by 11PM.  (more…)

How my travels started

The Road, Travels Started

The Road

I have been travelling for some time, initially, within my province of Punjab, India, then road trip in the northern plains, and then South East Asia.  But this is not how / when I started travelling.  Prior to this, ignoring my business travel, my travel as a kid was negligible limited to my village, and couple of other towns.  This actually became sort of a ritual every year.  Summer vacations one trip and winter vacations another to another place.  Travels started for me when I was told to spend 15 – 20 days on road in a month.  25 if required.
